2026–2029: Recognition

The Politics of Recognition: How Social Status and Recognition Shape Attachment to Democracy in France and Germany

The Recognition project examines the links between subjective social status, social recognition and political attitudes in France and Germany. It challenges the idea that low social status alone can explain support for radical political movements or weaker attachment to democracy, and analyses the extent to which feeling valued, respected and recognised by political parties and fellow citizens can influence these attitudes. This 3-year project (September 2026 – August 2029) is co-coordinated by ESPOL and the University of Siegen under the ANR-FRAL programme.
