Abstract:
Whether it is Kamala Harris or Donald Trump, the 47th President of the United States will inherit a country that is deeply fractured politically, socially and geographically. The election looks set to be a close one, and Donald Trump is already preparing legal recourse in the event of defeat. The choice of president is underpinned by a crystallisation of many issues (economic, social, political and geopolitical), as two visions of America are pitted against each other. The aim will therefore be to measure the scale and possible consequences of a conservative victory, which could dominate the three branches of the American government, or of a victory by the first woman from a minority background at the head of the United States. Analysing the American elections will therefore be an opportunity to define the contours of the new presidency and draw some lessons about the current political state of the United States.
