Overview

Security: myth or reality? Deciphering the challenges of today’s world

As well as being a top priority for governments around the world, security has become as much a part of our everyday language as it is of our daily lives. Hardly a day goes by without politicians and the media mentioning yet another “security problem”. The Master’s programme in International Politics and Security asks what this tells us about our contemporary world, and whether our world really has become more dangerous and uncertain than before.

Understanding the challenges of security in a changing world: An interdisciplinary programme

At the intersection of international relations studies, security and defence studies, political theory, sociology and history, this programme offers an in-depth understanding of how international security and safety are transforming, both conceptually and practically, in an increasingly interconnected and rapidly changing world. To do this, it analyses the role of the various players in defining and resolving security problems that go beyond the single framework of state action. The programme aims to equip students with the critical skills needed to understand and address the socio-political mechanisms at the root of security issues (from transnational armed conflict and violence to environmental and cyber security), as well as the growing uncertainty associated with them.
