Funding you PhD

There are many options for funding your thesis. Here you will find all the information you need to find the funding that suits you best.

Funding options

There are several types of funding:

  • Doctoral contracts: This is the most common form of funding. Doctoral contracts are awarded by the doctoral school and funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, public research bodies or private companies. A contract PhD student earns around €2,000 gross per month.
  • Grants: Numerous grants are available for doctoral students, including the Eiffel grant, the Marie Curie grant and grants from foundations and associations. These grants help to finance all or part of the doctorate.
  • Funding by a company: It is also possible to fund a PhD through a research contract with a company. This type of contract often comes with higher remuneration than traditional doctoral contracts.
  • Supervision: Doctoral students may also be paid as monitors. In this case, they teach or tutor students.
