Abstract:

The influence of political parties on the functioning of political systems has been widely emphasised. But less emphasis has been placed on the opposite influence: that of political systems on parties. In presidential or semi-presidential systems, political parties are profoundly influenced by the central role of the election of the president by direct or indirect universal suffrage and by a process of personalisation of power. It is therefore important to focus more specifically on the relationship between the president and his party before and after elections. In order to measure the autonomy allowed to the presidential party from a comparative approach, 42 parties from 25 countries with a presidential or semi-presidential system have been selected in this book, in order to highlight the differences in party characteristics between democratic and authoritarian systems.

Jean-Louis Thiébault is a French political scientist, professor emeritus and former director of the Lille Institute of Political Studies (1997-2007).
