As part of their studies, ESPOL first-year Master’s students had the opportunity to engage with institutional actors and exchange with professionals from key sectors, during themed study trips.

From 16 to 20 February, ESPOL’s first-year Master’s students took part in their annual study trips, a key highlight of the curriculum. Far more than a simple field trip, these trips provide a unique academic and human experience, enabling students to broaden their horizons, discover diverse professional environments, and engage with key actors in public policy.

Students were divided into mixed groups, encouraging interdisciplinary exchange and the sharing of perspectives. Each destination was structured around a specific theme, reflecting the major issues studied at ESPOL.

Four destinations, four key themes

Brussels & Bonn – Climate policy

Students met with major stakeholders including the DG CLIMA of the European Commission, the European Parliament, Bruxelles Environnement, and the Climate Action Network (CAN).

In Bonn, they visited institutions such as Germanwatch, the German Federal Agency for Nature Protection and the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS). These exchanges offered valuable insights into climate governance at both local and European levels.

Berlin – European governance

In Berlin, students explored the functioning of German and European governance systems. The programme included visits to the Bundestag and Bundesrat, the Federal Foreign Office, and the Representation of North Rhine-Westphalia. They also engaged with experts from the German Council on Foreign Relations, the Jacques Delors Centre, and the European Parliament Liaison Office, with a particular focus on disinformation challenges.

Tallinn & Tartu – Digital politics and governance

In Estonia, students discovered a pioneering model of digital transformation. At the University of Tartu (Johan Skytte Institute), they attended sessions on e-governance, digital public services, cyber security, and diplomacy in the digital age. The programme also included visits to the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE), the Estonian Cooperation Assembly, and eu-LISA, the European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice.

Geneva – International and security politics

In Geneva, students were immersed in the world of international organisations. They visited the Palais des Nations, the European Union Delegation to the United Nations, UNIDIR, and the International Organization for Migration. The programme also featured meetings with humanitarian actors such as SOS Méditerranée, a visit to the archives of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and an academic exchange at the Graduate Institute.

An enriching academic and human experience

These study trips fully reflect ESPOL’s educational approach, grounded in openness, interdisciplinarity, and direct engagement with professional realities. By interacting with practitioners, experts, and decision-makers, students gain a deeper understanding of contemporary challenges while refining their career aspirations.

ESPOL extends its sincere thanks to the academic organisers and to all the institutions and organisations that welcomed our students and contributed to making these study trips such a valuable and inspiring experience!
